I know map arrangements aren't the most popular topic, generally people have bigger things on their mind, like doing squat thrusts or trying on pants, but the Waterman butterfly is just too beautiful to ignore. I myself, often occupied with squat thrusts and pants, have not studied the projection thoroughly, however I do know that it is an unfolded globe that has been treated as an octohedron, arising from a spherical extraction constructed from cubic closest-packed spheres into a convex hull.
